Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. Formed on August 23 during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season this storm caused devastation along much of the north-central Gulf Coast. Katrina devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans and several of those neighborhoods were amongst the poorest and oldest in the city. The majority of residents have not received any substantial aid but they still have a mortgage.

Your utility company has declared bankruptcy but service is not necessarily available. If you are struggling to pay the bill, you can still have your utilities shut off.

Even if you can rebuild – there is still no infrastructure to allow it.

If you are one of the families moved into a FEMA trailer, your children may have lost their school-yard playground. Those were the easiest places to lay gravel and place the trailers.

But you still are trying to someday move home.

Maybe you need $300 to pay your telephone bill because your elderly mom was relocated to Texas. Or your house needs $500 in repairs to make it safe to live in and you don't have it.

A Message of hope

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all."
